WHAT HAS SING'S PUBLIC INTEREST WHISTLEBLOWER KAREN MAREE SMITH LEARNED SINCE HER EMPLOYMENT WAS TERMINATED BY QUEENSLAND HEALTH 5 YEARS AGO?

Karen Maree Smith's employment was terminated by Queensland Health 5 years ago for reporting the abuse and neglect of elderly residents at Eventide Nursing Home Brighton/Sandgate. This facility is now renamed Brighton Health Campus.
What has she learned since blowing the whistle?

NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED

NOTHING HAS CHANGED IN AGED CARE REGARDLESS OF STATE OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PROMISES

EXPECT TO LOSE YOUR JOB IF YOU SPEAK OUT

IF YOU VALUE SLEEPING WITH A CLEAR CONSCIENCE - SPEAK OUT NO MATTER WHAT THE COST

  1. Age care has got worse, some age care facilities give each client a three minutes wash a day. some of the food you would not eat you self .One place I work the laundry doesn't work weekends so there are no towels on Mondays to dry clients with , so staff use face clothes instead , I think staff shut there mouths to keep a jobs what has Australia became ?

  2. In your heart and mind you have spoken out.
For those you have given a voice deseased or alive - they care for you, they watch over you.
The eyes behind the vacant face say it all. They know who cares they know who doesnt. They are the keepers of your good soul.
While ever aged care is managed by the ruthless and the incompetent the aged will suffer as will staff.
There is a breed of leaders out there who are resident focused and not frightened to cull the bullies in aged care.
The big players are beginning to hurt ( in the pocket )and families are holding them accountable for pain and suffering.
Co workers are responssible for the cover up in aged care - gutless, self protective and dishonest and there for the pay only.
It is amazing what can happen when families video on their phones staff cruelty and abuse.
A picture does not lie. And families are on the warpath.
    Await the litigation.

  3. Every action has a reaction.
In any employment if you speak out you will have your desk packed for you - it is a given.
That applies in any work place.
Mandatory reporting is a process only - there is no guarentee that action will be followed.
The process provides employment for the yet another governement department who repy on the facilities to do the investigation for them.
Name and shame would be more benificial.

  4. I agree with the above comment about aged care getting worse. It most definitely has. How dare the CEO's of these companies except pay rises when ground level staff delivering care have their hours cut to the bone. You would expect if a facility cuts the laundry staff, they could spare a few dollars to buy some extra towels. It never ceases to amaze me how these facilities actually bungle through accreditation.....but really, why even have it at all when one vital part of staffing and management systems was overlooked: a staff: resident ratio. How did the Aged Care Act not think to value such a vital aspect, even a child care centre has this. A vulnerable aged person has no basic level of staffing noted anywhere in the Act or accreditation process, it simply says adequate staff with appropriate qualifications. All this results in is disgruntled underpaid staff whose boss's are always expecting more from them - and we all know that this only results in staff staying who wouldn't be able to hold down a job anywhere else cause the good caring staff leave when they can't take delivering poor quality of care any longer.

  5. So true good staff will leave. Some staff will stay because they have to pay rent , its a job They put the yes staff on when accreditation people come . Why cant they have under cover accreditation staff in all these nursing homes because the truth might come out they might get caught out .Most accreditation staff know what age care is really about, it all corrupt. It very sad and getting worse. Aged Care Nurse!
